Introduction
In order to achieve a deeper level of understanding of operating systems, it is important to research something in the area on your own. This will expose you to the latest information available, thus making sure that your knowledge is up to date.
As part of your IT360 course work, you are required to submit a research paper. The paper must focus on one of the following topics:
1) A comparison of Windows versus Linux based operating systems.
2) Modern approaches to process synchronization.
3) A overview of mobile operating systems including limitations of mobile operating systems and how they may be overcome.
You will develop your research paper in three parts: the topic and outline in Module 3 (5%), the draft in Module 5 (5%), and your final research paper in Module 7 (15%).
Module 3: Research Paper: Topic and Outline
In this milestone you will identify the topic that you will use for your research paper. You will also submit an outline of your research paper. The topic and outline assignment is an essential part of your research paper development and must focus on one of the three topics listed above.
Please follow these guidelines for this assignment:
- Identify which topic you will be using for the research project and why you chose that particular topic.
- Include an outline that lists the major concepts and subjects that you plan to address in your paper.
- The deliverable for this milestone should be 1-2 pages in length.
- Upload assignments using a file name that contains your name and the assignment number. This is important because the instructor downloads all files to grade them.
- Submit your assignmentsas either Word documents or PDF files, NOT as graphics format files.
Your topic and outline assignment is worth 5% of your grade and is evaluated according to the Research Paper Rubric. In order to receive full credit, your submitted work should be sufficiently detailed, correct, and submitted on or before the posted due date.
Module 5: Research Paper: Draft
You are developing your paper in three parts: the topic and outline in Module 3, a draft in Module 5, and the completed paper in Module 7. The assignment in Module 5 provides you with an opportunity to submit your draft and obtain feedback so that your final research paper submission in Module 7 can be improved based on the feedback.
For this assignment, submit your research paper draft according to the following guidelines:
- State your topic (as chosen from the list in Module 3).
- Your draft should be 3 to 5 pages long.
- This rough draft should be a complete paper including:
- Title:The title is a concise statement of the subject of the paper.
- Abstract:The abstract is an "executive overview" of your paper. It should be a 50-100 word summary that would be appropriate to give to your instructor to indicate the essence of your project.
- Table of Contents:In this section, list each section of your paper along with the page number. The list should include:
§ Tables and figures (if you include more than two)
§ Appendices, if included
§ A bibliography or reference section listing sources used and including links to online content
o Introduction: In this section, state the purpose of the paper in succinct, declarative sentences. Convince your reader that the study will have a practical value and meaning for you and that the study will be based upon the concepts studied in the course.
o Background and Significance: This section provides further justification of the need for your study. If your project examines a topic drawn from your work, include a description of your work environment, your position in the organization and how your position fits into the organization, both vertically and horizontally.
§ Explain the applicable concepts from the course. If your project is focused on a particular organization, explain how these concepts apply to that organization. What is the organization doing well? Would it benefit by adopting some of the concepts you have been studying?
o Discussion, Implications and Recommendations: In this section, provide a thorough discussion of your findings and the implications of your study.
§ Be sure to include only the pertinent implications.
o References: You cannot use your texts alone as your primary source of information. You must draw on other sources such as web sites, business journals, legal and compliance journals, government agencies, professional associations, industry standards, and so on. You will need to reference at least three credible bibliographic resources.
§ Be sure to support the information presented with appropriate references. It is important that all references and quotes be cited correctly. All sources, including web sites, must be referenced in the bibliography or references list. You must follow APA style.
- Format: Keep in mind that all accepted rules of English composition apply. Papers must be word-processed, double-spaced, and must have standard margins (one inch on each side).
- The instructor will give you feedback so that you may improve your paper before the final version.
The following requirements apply for uploading your assignments:
- Upload assignments using a file name that contains your name and the assignment number. This is important because the instructor downloads all files to grade them.
- Submit your assignmentsas either Word documents or PDF files, NOT as graphics format files.
Your draft paper is worth 5% of your total grade and is evaluated according to the Research Paper Rubric. In order to receive full credit, your submitted work should be sufficiently detailed, correct, and submitted on or before the posted due date.
Module 7: Research Paper: Final
Submit your final research paper following the guidelines below.
