So what I am going to do is to allow you to choose which one you want to do your essay on. If you have copies of both Peires and Mda, and you have started reading both books, the more you bring in from both readings in answering your essay question, the better your grade will be. But no one will be penalized for reading only one of the books. So you can make an A on the essay by only concentrating on one book.

Essay Question on Mda's Heart of Redness. You are responsible for reading the entire book. Do the reading with the intention of answering the essay question.

The issue in the village is whether or not the residents will support the building of a water theme park at the site where Nongqkawuse had her visions and issued her prophecy. Since many rich tourists from American and Britain have read The Dead Will Arise, developers believe they will want to vacation and experience modern Xhosa culture in Nongqkawuse's home village. There are the sides on the issue -- the believers and non-believers.

In the essay, explain how the believers came to be believers from the time of Nongqkawuse, and explain how the unbelievers came to unbelievers. How do the historical experiences of their believer and unbeliever ancestors influence their stances on the development issue? Which side is most supportive of development and explain why, and which side does not trust development and explain why?
Your essay should be typed, double-space, and 4 to 6 pages in length. It must contain a thesis statement, which is your argument about the believers and the unbelievers, and you must use supporting evidence from Mda to defend your argument. If you bring in supporting evidence from Peires, then your grade will be considerably enhanced.

Essay 2 on J.B. Peires, The Dead Will Arise. You will be responsible for the following pages from Peires: Chaps 1, 3, 7, 8, 9.

Based on what you have read, Who or What do you hold responsible for the movement? Your thesis should be structured on answering the question of who you hold responsible for the movement and the outcome. Use evidence from the readings to make your case. If you have read parts of The Heart of Redness, and you can relate the factors or changes to characters from that novel, your grade on the essay will be significantly enhanced.
