In an e-mail interview in December 2004, a New York Times reporter asked the renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, "What is your IQ?" to which he replied, "I have no idea. People who boast about their IQ are losers," and went on to say that "there really is a continuous range of abilities with no clear dividing line."24 Given this comment, would Hawking seem to advocate treating intelligence as a categorical variable, classifying an individual as "moron" for an IQ under 70, "genius" for an IQ over 140, and so on?
