GEOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT
First, you have to read two essays:
Essay 1 "The Politics of Young and Old" by JEAN PISANI-FERRYand
Essay 2 "How Can Federal Spending For Children Achieve The Same Protected Status As Spending On The Elderly?" BY ALAN PYKE.
When reading those essays, and after that, think about the ideas from economic geography that you find there.
Then:
1. In about 500 to 600 words, explain, with appropriate references to those two essays, the role of demographics in economic geography.
2. In about a 75-word postscript, which will not be graded but will be a part of the class discussions, respond to this:
In the latest US mid-term elections, the turnout rate among younger citizens was less than 20%, compared to more than 50% for senior voters. ... This generational gap in electoral participation explains why politicians care more about the elderly than about the young. But in aging societies, the more the young abstain from voting, the more decisions by parliaments and governments will be biased against their interests.
