In a tube filled with atoms that were excited by an electric current, some of the vibrating atoms move towards the observer while others move away as a result of the particles' random motion, and as a result of the doppler effect, the spectral lines will broaden. Examine the difference in this broadening effect for atomic hydrogen between 300K and 5500K (between room temperature and the surface of the sun's temperature.) At these two temperatures, are the characteristic velocities Newtonian or Relativistic?
