In 2009, the average number of runs scored in the National League was approximately 4.5 per team. Therefore, a team has done an adequate job with its offense if it scores at least 5 runs in a game. Similarly, the team will have done an adequate job with its defense if the opposition scores 4 runs or fewer.
Here are a few examples:
Score Adequate
Los Angeles Opponent Offense Defense
2 1 No Yes
6 1 Yes Yes
6 5 Yes No
2 3 No Yes
1 6 No No
6 8 Yes No
#1, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Washington Nationals.
Suppose that a baseball executive, asks you to find out how often these three teams did an adequate job of:
(1) Scoring runs, generating offense
(2) Preventing runs, defense
(3) Both offense and defense
(4) Neither offense nor defense
Compute the proportion of the time that each of the three teams were in each of these four categories. What do these tell you about the strengths and weaknesses of each team?
