Implementing iv pump interoperability

My proposed practicum project is implementing IV pump interoperability. With IV pump interoperability, the orders put in will automatically be programmed into the pump and anything ran through the pump will automatically be documented (Augustino, 2021). A change like this has been shown to improve patient outcomes, decrease medication errors and decrease nurses workload.

Model Used During Project

The triangle method is a good tool for this project because it focuses on all the major components of the implementation; the technology, the organization, the provider user, and the patients (Ancker et al., 2012). This model will help to determine the importance of this change by looking at the safety of the current technology used and what this new system could do to increase that safety as well as how the provider, organization, and patients will be affected with the change.

Two Theories

Two theories that relate to my project is Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and sociotechnical theory. TAM helps to understand the how the end-users feel about technology and how likely they are to accept it (Kowitlawakul, 2011). Sociotechnical theory helps to understand the work at hand so that the technology can benefit the work and not just replace a possibly already bad system (Currie et al., 2009). Both of these theories are good because they will help with making the change more successful by being able to better understand the end-users and how to make they more accepting of the change.

Evaluation Plan

A formative evaluation is a good one to use because it can focus on the specific goals and objectives of the project. It can also be ongoing so that it is happening through out the project and allows for real-time modifications (Christ & Kember, 2018). The type of formative evaluation I would use would be a mixture of individual surveys and focus groups. These two evaluation will allow for feedback from the staff to see if there are any changes that need to be made or if everything is flowing smoothly. A summative evaluation is used to evaluate the value of the project and is often used to help stakeholders make decisions regarding the project (Plotner, 2018). It also sounds like summative evaluations can evaluate the end of the project as well. The type of summative evaluation I would use is the outcome evaluation. This type of evaluation will help to determine if the project did what it was intended to do.

Potential ethical issues that could occur is a breach in data. To avoid this we need to work closely with IT to make sure everything is running as it should and done appropriately.
