Illustrates your chosen social justice issue

Discussion Problem 1:

For this week's discussion, you will share an image that illustrates your chosen social justice issue.

Imagine yourself presenting the issue to a room full of professionals: what image could you use to make an immediate impact? Please keep in mind, your picture should maintain the integrity of the population you aim to assist. Avoid including pictures of individuals' faces unless you have written, and express permission to share the photo with your instructor and peers. Additionally, please make sure to share only images that you can share without violating copyright protections, such as Unsplash or Creative Commons.

Discuss: In your initial response, include the following:

  • State your social justice issue.
  • Share your image (you can paste your image directly into your discussion, attach it to the discussion, or include a link) and how it encourages others to act.
  • Describe what a photo of justice for your social justice issue would look like.
  • Discuss how photographs convey meaning.
  • Compare and contrast photographs with other forms of communication.

Discussion Problem 2:

For this discussion, you will conduct a brief interview with a leader who works or volunteers at a social justice organization. Use your current network, social media, or LinkedIn to identify someone who would be willing to give you 10 to 15 minutes of their time to discuss the work they do. As you identify an individual, remember there is a wide scope of businesses, schools, churches, and nonprofits doing good work in social justice. After your interview, you will analyze the interview responses and build a connection between ECE professional standards and the course content.

Prior to conducting your interview, review the following discussion prompts to ensure you ask the correct questions.

Here are some potential questions that you may ask:

  • From your perspective, what are some things that still need to happen to move social justice issues forward for the people or community you serve?
  • How has your definition of social justice changed due to working in this area?
  • What recommendations or advice do you have for anyone looking to become more engaged in social justice issues?
  • What expectations must you meet as a leader involved in social justice issues? In your initial response, include the following:
  • Discuss who you interviewed (do not use full names), where they work or volunteer, and the social justice issues they face.
  • Summarize your interviewee's perspective on a leader's expectations to advance social justice issues.
  • Compare a leader's expectations to a leader's actual role as described by your interviewee.
  • Analyze how the interview results align with ECE professional standards.
  • Discuss your personal reflection about how the interview shaped your understanding of the work surrounding social justice issues that leaders encounter.
  • Share any additional impactful or useful parts of the interview.
