Problem
Role reversal occurs when the parent expects the child to take on the parent role in the family by nurturing and loving the parent rather than the parent nurturing and loving the child. If the child does not nurture or care for the parent, the parent feels frustrated, unwanted, rejected, and not loved. These feelings can trigger an aggressive response from the parent that culminates in maltreatment.
