Illustrate term in prison known as institutionalized

Problem: There is a term in prison known as "institutionalized." In effect, it simply means that inmates have become so familiar and comfortable living inside of a prison, that they are not likely to succeed once released. While in prison, these inmates know the rules. They know the game; how to make things work for them. In prison, they are successful. But once released back into the world, they simply don't function as productive members of society. Do you believe inmates can become institutionalized? Do you think that the same thing can happen to staff? If being in prison can change someone's personality, can working in a prison have the same effect? Or does being there for only 8 hours a day, as opposed to living there 24 hours a day, lessen the effect that the environment can influence a person? In short, I'm looking for you to compare and contrast the effects of prison culture on inmates and staff.
