Reducing health disparity and inequity in the United States is a social mandate for nursing in the 21st century. Multiple social determinants of health (SDOH) that negatively impact patient health and contribute to health inequity have been identified and include:
- Safe housing, transportation, and recreation
- Racism, discrimination, and violence
- Education, job opportunities, and access to healthcare
- Access to nutritious foods and physical activity opportunities
- Polluted air and water
- Language and literacy skills
Nurses are uniquely positioned to assess for social determinants of health and positively address health equity. Select one of the social determinants of health that you believe influences an individual's health. Research an article, webinar, TED talk etc then respond to the following: (Please cite in APA format the resource you utilized for this discussion).
How does the selected SDOH affect an individuals or community's health?
Choose one Healthy People 2030 objective related to the SDOH topic you chose, then explain how nurses could participate in achieving the goal.
What can you do to begin working on the problems of health disparities in your community?
