Problem
Probably the best-known photographer of Native Americans is Edward S. Curtis, whose massive multi-volume The North American Indian portrayed Indigenous peoples across the continent. Even today, we can purchase calendars, postcards, and books with Curtis images, and his photographs are often used as illustrations in history books and documentaries.
Assessments of Curtis's portrayal of Native Americans are mixed. As Bogre notes, "The North American Indian is both praised as a timeless document of a culture that was 'vanishing' and criticized for being a romanticized white colonial version of Native Americans."
