As a military member for 20 years, I have experienced the bureaucratic challenges of the military. The Heritage article by Donald Devine, authored by a conservative figure, highlights the issues plaguing the federal system, including the large government with civilians and the difficulty in disciplining and removing bad employees. The article also outlines previous administrations' attempts to control the number of employees but has failed in the long run.
A 2020 article found that 52% of Americans would prefer a larger government with more services, while 45% would prefer a smaller government with less service. This suggests that a larger government would require more money to pay for programs and positions, which is not well thought through. Additionally, 74% of Republicans and 76% of Democrats want a smaller government.
The author believes that the nation needs to make tough cuts and make the government smaller while providing essential services, but they do not want to be accused of causing massive unemployment.
