Assignment- Analysis of ecological data
Task: For the past several years, internal students participated in field exercises to characterise a local wetland, Girraween Lagoon. In the last few years, these activities involved the collection of taxonomic lists, and other data, for vegetation and macro-invertebrates. In the first few years, information on fish was also collected (but this was discontinued for logistical and OHS reasons).
The aim of this assignment is to summarise the results collected and describe the differences between results for Girraween Lagoon and those for other local wetlands (relevant reports are provided: see relevant references section). A further aim is to consider and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods we used to determine the ecological character of wetlands and whether what was done was adequate to the goal of better understanding the ecological character.
Your report should address the points listed below.
1. Illustrate and describe temporal patterns in the results for Girraween Lagoon: use the data and include appropriate graphical or tabular summaries (statistical tests are not required).
2. Using the Signal score values for the macroinvertebrates describe what they tell us about the condition of Girraween Lagoon: include discussion of seasonal trends and use the key references listed below.
3. Discuss and evaluate adequacy of the sampling methods used at Girraween Lagoon: include discussion of advantages and disadvantages and if enough sampling was done to adequately understand the ecological character of the wetland
4. Devise a better future monitoring plan to better understand the ecological character of this wetland
