Watkins is a member of the bargaining unit at Stith, Inc., and has been very vocal in his criticism of the performance of the union’s leadership in the last contract negotiations. Ronnie Elder, the union’s chief steward, is fed up with Watkins’ complaints, and meets with Kay Alston, Stith’s HR director, to discuss terminating Watkins. Alston believes that Watkins can be discharged for his attendance abuse over a three-year period. Stith, however, has never disciplined anyone for such conduct.
