The purpose of this exercise is to identify all of the technical standards that affect a laptop computer. Begin by making a list of all of the components of a laptop computer with wireless capability. Then, identify if there is a technical standard that governs each of these components. (If you know the name of the specific technical standard, that's great. Write it down. If you don't know the name of the standard, don't worry about it, just describe the standard.) When you are done, count up the number of components and the number of standards on your list. Do you have a lot or a few? Depending on what you found, explain why you think there are either a lot or only a few technical standards that affect a laptop computer with wireless capability.
2) Identify three technical standards. Investigate how those standards came into existence. (They don't all have to have come into existence the same way.) Explain why the mechanisms that you identified accounted for the emergence of standards.
3) Identify a standards battle that was fought by two companies (other than the DVD versus DIVX battle described in the opening vignette). Investigate the tactics used by the winners to fight the standards battle. Did the choice of tactics affect that company's victory? Why or why not?
