Identify three problem behavior that you think you encounter

Problem

Goal: To understand problem behaviors and identify responses to them that can prevent problem behaviors from derailing your group.

Example: John has spent the first two group sessions monopolizing the conversation, despite your attempts to gently steer the conversation to other topics and engage the rest of the group. When the third session convenes, three of your group participants do not show up, and you receive an email from one stating that they don't think they will come back as they feel like there is little benefit to listening to the John take over all of the discussions.

Task

A. Identify three problem behaviors that you think you might encounter in your group, based on your group topic and demographic.

B. Identify and discuss a method/skill for each of the three problem behaviors that you would plan to use to address these issues if they come up.

C. Discuss what the group leader in the example above could have done differently before the situation resulted in a loss of membership.

D. Discuss how the group leader should respond to the current state of the group and the stated concerns about the "monopolizer".
