Problem: Bioethicist Charles Weijer has presented the following hypothetical case: Several hypnotically suggestible, but otherwise healthy college students are randomly selected to receive one of three hypnotic suggestions: partial deafness without awareness of the cause; partial deafness with awareness of the cause; and no deafness but an ear itch. The hypothesis is that people in the first group, as compared with those in the other two groups, will demonstrate more symptoms of paranoia. Subjects are assessed with a variety of measures, including psychometric scales and a scoring of observed behavior. After being evaluated, the subjects are hypnotized again, debriefed at the end of the study, and reassessed after one month. Assume you were on the IRB asked to review this study.
