Assignment task:
Fried et al. (2014) identify severe care insurance gaps among legal permanent residents (LPRs) and undocumented individuals in various ways. Ineligibility in current insurance and medical support systems, such as Medicaid, state programs, and state and federal health insurance exchanges, leaves communities responsible for creating a large enough safety net to support the healthcare needs of those excluded (Fried et al, 2014). Further, the calculations of such safety nets are shaky at best, as eliciting responses about citizenship is unreliable, thus leading to inaccurate calculations on insurance pricing, and safety net preparedness. The study by Fried et al. provides potential opportunities for better supporting uninsured immigrant people, primarily by expanding the listed supports to support LDRs of less than 5 years and undocumented community members (2014). My personal belief is that all immigrant people should be covered by Medicaid from both moral and financial perspectives. The inevitable need to provide a safety net, and the responsibility to care for marginalized people, leads me to believe that the inclusion of income-relevant immigrant people, regardless of status, would be best managed through the further expansion of Medicaid.
