Nursing as we know it today has largely been influenced by Florence Nightingale. She is well known for reducing deaths by two-thirds in a hospital in the Crimea where she served. Many people do not know that she also pioneered medical records and statistics regarding the effects of certain practices. She created data visualization tables and diagrams to allow for easily readable data. One diagram she used was the coxcomb which is very similar to the pie charts often used today. The coxcomb was divided into 12 sections, each representing a month, and it tracked patients' deaths and the cause of death, proving that hygiene is a crucial component of patient care. The application of statistics in healthcare was revolutionary and has paved the way for new careers in the nursing field. Today we have infection control nurses to track statistics to identify positive and negative outcomes in patient care.
