Problem 1: Identify popular parenting practices during infancy and toddlerhood that are consistently socialized and reinforced within American societies. Examples include: holding a baby too much "spoils" the child; allow babies to cry it out to train them to sleep through the night; babies should learn to "self soothe"; infants should be able to adapt to multiple caregivers; etc.
Problem 2: Discuss how research on attachment and brain development does not support these popular parenting practices. It is important to note that this discussion is not based on your opinion of parenting, but is an opportunity for your to critically analyze how certain popularized parenting practices are inconsistent with current research.
Problem 3: How might you, as a social worker, talk to parents about parenting practices that best support their child's healthy development? Please use the literature to support your position.
