Breastfeeding is so beneficial to both mother and baby. Infants who do not receive breast milk are likely to experience poorer health outcomes than breastfed infants; mothers who do not breastfeed increase their own health risks. There are various studies, research, and journals that focus on breastfeeding. Although my project might be a topic professionals have already studied, it would be worth wild to present to The International Breastfeeding Journal and Prolacta Bioscience.
The International Breastfeeding Journal, is one that currently publishes journals focused on nursing, midwifery, pediatric, obstetric, family medicine, public health, immunology, physiology, sociology and many other topics, with electronic publishing allowing for faster publication time for authors and open access ensures the journal is easily accessible to readers (The International Breastfeeding Journal, n.d). In order to help women, breastfeed successfully, there is a need to understand both the physiology of lactation and the social and cultural context within which breastfeeding occurs. The journal addresses all of these aspects, including identifying women who are at increased risk of not breastfeeding, the benefits to breastfeeding and the health effects of not breastfeeding for both mother and baby. It also looks at initiation to increasing breastfeeding initiation and duration as well as management of breastfeeding problems which is correlated to my presentation. It would be nice to collect data after implementing my project and be able to show this data as to how breastfeeding support can change initiation and duration of breastfeeding.
Last month I had the opportunity to attend a webinar by Prolacta Bioscience. Prolacta is a research driven company dedicated to advancing the science of breast milk. It has invested in research, clinical studies and facilities to develop and test human milk-based products such as fortifiers which are changing the standard car of premature infants globally (Prolacta Bioscience, 2020). This company highly support breastfeeding and breastfeeding initiatives because through its own research, it has concluded that breast milk is the best nutrition for critically ill babies. My project could focuses on providing mothers with support, and mothers who have their newborns in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) are mothers who need additional support. Because they are separated from their mothers, they may not be provided with the attention they need such as breastfeeding support. Additionally, some of these mothers have breastfeeding challenges due to their babies being premature, having a poor suck-swallow-breath coordination, and not producing enough milk. These mothers desperately need breastfeeding support.
Dissemination of EBP and research, such as presenting results at a conference or writing an article for a journal, is an important part of professional practice. Identify one professional journal and one nursing or health care conference where you might present your project. Discuss why each of your choices is the best option for you to disseminate your new knowledge.
