Environmental Problems in Society

We will begin to explore the field of environmental sociology. Environmental sociology is a relatively new area of inquiry that emerged largely in response to increased societal recognition of the seriousness of environmental problems. Environmental sociology is typically defined as the study of relations between human societies and their physical environments, or societal-environmental interactions (Dunlap and Catton, 1979).

To help us understand this important field of study and get our conversations started, address the following in your initial response.

Identify one pressing present-day environmental problem that may make planning sustainably for the future a challenge. Examples may include pollution, overpopulation, deforestation, and so forth. Why do you think planning sustainably is a challenge? Explain with at least two reasons. In your follow-up responses, reply to and build on the ideas expressed by your fellow students.
