Identify journalists who have a relevant audience base

Assignment task: You need to secure national media coverage for the U.S. Forest Service. You can choose to pitch either the launch of the new website or the event in Missoula, Montana. We are looking for only unpaid, organic coverage in major media outlets. Online-only sources are fine as long as they are media organizations, not just an individual's blog.

1. Identify three journalists who have a relevant audience base for the story you are going to pitch. These folks should be qualified and respected in their fields. Their publication should have significant distribution or reach. Form a document that lists their:

  • Name
  • Publication name
  • URL for their main social media account/blog (If they don't have either, you can list it for their publication)
  • At least two examples of recent coverage or posts of similar topics that would seem to indicate their interest or relevance in reporting this story

2.) Form an email pitch to one person from your list.

You can determine the exact angle. The pitch must include an email subject line as well as the body of the email.

The pitch should be short, personalized, free of grammar and spelling mistakes, and follow best practices. You can get creative about your angle, and what you can offer the journalist.
