Information about writing your Career Plan
The following information should be read in consultation with the assessment information in the Unit Information Guide (UIG).
Structure of the plan
The word count for this assignment is up to 2500 words. This means you will not be able to include more than four positions of around 600 words each. On the next page is a template on how you should structure this assignment. This template uses the four positions of; Floor person, Pit manager; Shift manager and Games manager. The last position has the most detail on it and you may want to look at that first to understand the sort of information you will need to include.
You should note that in the Floor person section it mentions that the previous position was a gaming attendant. This position is described in a way that matches coin booth cashier/change personnel from Reading 6.1. Also, the Games manager position describes the VP casino operations position as an Aspiration. Hence, in this example there were six positions researched, but only four presented in detail.
Template
There are comments throughout the template that will assist you complete this assignment. After the template is some additional information regarding the marking criteria, referencing and formatting.
Kilby, Fox and Lucas (2005, p. 46) display an organisational chart which identifies the key managerial positions within a typical casino. They also briefly explain the roles and responsibilities associated with each position.
Your task is to identify gaming venues, at least one of which is outside of Australia, that you may one day like to work at. You should plan your career path to the final position of Vice President Casino Operations at a casino, using the Kilby et al. chart. This is a senior level position and you will need to have an extensive track record in management to be successful in this position.
Your starting point should be that you have just completed your degree at Southern Cross University and are about to commence work in a hotel, club or casino in Australia. This will be an entry level position, but your SCU qualification will help you obtain this position and also the higher managerial roles later in your career. You may also consider obtaining further qualifications (e.g. Masters) to enhance your employment prospects. You may find it helpful to work backwards in your plan by starting at the VP position.

- Demonstrated knowledge of the gaming industry within both local and international contexts
- Demonstrated understanding of the skills relevant to work in the gaming industry
- Evidence of reflection in identifying vocational strengths and weaknesses
- Identifying appropriate future training and education.
