Are Racial Profiling and Police Discrimination Really Problems?
The media plays a huge role in communicating problems with racial profiling and discrimination. Whether claiming excessive use of force, the racial profiling of suspects, or unequal application of the law, the media spotlight is shining on our criminal justice system and calling for change. For this assignment, develop an essay focusing on the following.
• Identify an instance of alleged police discrimination.
• Discuss the details of the incident, including whether the discrimination was founded or unfounded.
• What role, if any, does police discretion play in racial profiling or discrimination?
• What intervention(s) would you recommend to reduce racial profiling and discrimination?
Write a paper that meets the following requirements:
• Be 2 to 3 pages in length not counting the title and reference pages, which you must include.
• Use terms, evidence, and concepts from class readings.
• Cite at least three scholarly sources for this assignment. Scholarly resources include peer-reviewed journal articles, books, the class textbook, or reports/documents from the government (.gov sites). A scholarly source does not include general sources from the internet (.com, .org, .edu, and .net sites are not scholarly). Scholarly resources should be current (no older than five years). If the class textbook is used as a source, then five other scholarly sources must be used.
