Project Objectives:
- To identify the reasons why inmates may be placed in Restrictive Housing.
- To describe the conditions of confinement for inmates in RH status.
- To identify the Mental Health concerns regarding the use of RH in correctional facilities.
- To identify whether the presence of mental health issues increases the potential for an inmate to be placed in Restrictive Housing.
- To identify whether there is an impact upon the mental health of inmates placed in Restrictive Housing.
Assignment;
Research the field of Corrections, correctional journals, correctional periodicals, various departments of correction, and other resources to determine current opinions regarding the use of Restrictive Housing in correctional facilities.
Write a report on your findings providing a description of the conditions of confinement for inmates placed in Restrictive Housing; the reasons for placement in RH status; mental health concerns for inmates both upon admission and release from RH status: and services provided to inmates in RH status.
Identify alternatives to the use of Restrictive Housing for inmates with Mental Health issues.
The report should include a minimum of two outside sources (not including course instructional materials).

NOTE: There are several OERs concerning Restrictive Housing included in the Reading section for Week 8. When you conduct your research be aware that Restrictive Housing may be labeled differently depending upon the correctional system and/or the reason for the use of the designated beds. Some of the common names for this type of housing are Segregation, Separate Confinement, Special Management, Protective Custody, Disciplinary Detention, and Administrative Detention.
