Assignment
Students are requested to read widely and answer the following questions on project management. Furthermore, students are required to integrate theory and practise in their answers. The examiner will take into consideration the links to theory and practice and finally the synthesis of the discussion. Students should support their discussions with tables, figures and graphs where possible.
Project scope:
In the residential suburb where the state president of South Africa and his family lives, there is a need for a church. The president's family has to travel long distances in order attend church due to the lack of a suitable church in the suburb. The president is eager to show his fellow residents that their desire for the church will be realised. A vacant piece of land has been secured and the municipality has given the go ahead for the building of the church. You have been hand-picked to manage the project. The president is anxious to have the church built on time, within budget and within scope. You are required to compile a project plan that will instil confidence in the president that his promise to the people will be realized.
Question I
One of your initial tasks is to enlighten your team on the difference between projects and operations. Present to them this difference so that they may understand the uniqueness of project management.

Six Sigma, at many organisations simply means a measure of quality that strives for near perfection. Using the six sigma themes, discuss with your team how you will ensure that the highest quality levels are upheld on your project.

A project charter is a document which formalizes the commitment of the organisation to undertake the project which is in line with its strategic objectives. Present a project charter for your project. Critically discuss each item in the charter in detail.
