Assignment task:
For this assignment, consider the isms and phobias we have uncovered in class, including but not limited to racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, classism, sizeism, sexualism, or people that are discriminated against based on race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, socioeconomic status, social justice status, etc.
It can be the same topic you used for your last presentation or a new one based on the current needs in your community. Consider the following: Where do you see discrimination and bias in your community? What does it look like? What is being done about it? What needs to be done about it?
Identify your local or national newspaper or congressperson and how to submit an article to that entity or person.
You will write an editorial to a newspaper or letter to your local congressperson that includes, at a minimum:
1. Identifies the DEI issue in your community:
- Include statistics, a local story, or specific and detailed examples
2. Identifies what your community is doing or not doing to address the DEI issue
- Include specific standards, programs, policies, legislative proposals, etc...
3. Proposes what should be done to address the DEI issue in your community
- Includes particular examples, research, programs, new legislation, or policies
Follow the suggested guidelines when writing the editorial or letter to your congressperson
Include the newspaper's editor's name or congressperson's name at the heading of the letter.
