Idea that genres are flexible and socially constructed

Problem:

Something that's come up a number of times in our readings is the idea that genres are flexible and socially constructed. They change over time, they can be adapted or modified to meet the changing needs of communities that use them, and their "rules" only exist to the degree that people agree on them

To what extent do you agree that genres of composing are flexible (as opposed to having rigid rules)? In what ways could knowing that genres are, essentially, "made up" affect how you approach writing, creating, and communicating?
