This assignment requires you to read the article by Hutton on Zapata. Before you do the reading, take a look at Rivera's "Zapata" and Orozco's "Zapata". Read only from page 41 starting with "In the Mexican Revolution..." And end with, "....come to grips with his Zapata" (42). In Mexican history, Zapata is the hero of the peasants. This is your task. First, look at the two Zapata murals and reflect on them: how can you describe them? Is this how you imagined Zapata in our readings? Then answer the following question. In his article, Hutton states: "It is this ambiguity to which most American critics objected, lamenting the absence of a 'key' by which to interpret the work" (42). In your opinion, what is the "key" that can help in the understanding of Orozco's mural "Zapata Entering a Peasant's Hut"?
