Hox gene will induce profound developmental effects


In the common fruit fly (Drosophila) a mutation in only one HOX gene will induce profound developmental effects (ie, antennae become legs or halters become wings). However in human, a mutation in one HOX gene produces only minor malformations (extra ribs or extra digits). Explain.
