Your research center is a designated Comprehensive Center of Excellence by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that the suicide rate among American Indians/Alaska Natives (AIAN) is 99% greater than the general population (CDC, 2023, April 6). You have received a grant from NIMHD to develop a research instrument on mental health that is specifically designed for AIAN since this population has a high suicide rate compared to the general population. The initial phase of the grant includes focus groups with members of this community to help researchers develop better strategies to gain access to AIAN as well as to pilot test an instrument for adaptation for this community.
