Assignment task:
Based on the reading-Mathematics Learning in Early Childhood: Paths Toward Excellence and Equity
Christopher T. Cross, Taniesha A. Woods, and Heidi Schweingruber,
Part I: Introduction and Research on Learning - Elaborate on the evidence presented about how young children's everyday mathematics learning begins in infancy within the proximal environments in which they develop, its importance and more specifically, its contribution to cognitive development and what research on infancy reveals
Part II: Teaching-Learning Paths - Elaborate on the sequence of milestones for children in the core areas of number (including whole number, relations, and operations), geometry and also measurement. Discuss ways in which young children can be supported to learn about number and operations, and provide specific examples of how they are supported in early learning of geometry and measurement.
Part III: Contexts for Teaching and Learning - Elaborate on the context within which young children best learn mathematical topics as framed by standards, curriculum, teaching, and formative assessment. Add to this the importance of a quality early childhood workforce through teacher education of early childhood and subsequent professional development support.
