Assignment task:
This assignment allows you to begin thinking about how you want to develop the ideas of your thesis statement of your evaluation essay.
Use the worksheet below to develop your clear and concise thesis statement for your evaluation essay.
What are we supposed to be evaluating?
- It must be specific (you cannot evaluate "lattes," but you can evaluate "lattes from Starbucks")
- It can be legally purchased or obtained by an individual
- Something that you have access to often enough to do first-hand research
- Something in a category that you can speak with authority about (don't evaluate that latte if you only ever buy coffee at Starbucks) and come up with at least three solid criteria for
- Not something that is required for sustained life (air, food, water)
- Something that you can discuss in-depth for 750 or more words (you will need to pick one of these for your essay)
- "Safe" for general class consumption (don't write about something horribly offensive or broadly disgusting - be kind to your peer reviewer)
1. What product is being evaluated
2. What category will you be evaluating the product as?
3, What three or more criteria can any product in this category be evaluated based on?
4. Create thesis that names the product, states your overall judgement (worth the price), and introduce the key evaluative criteria. A simple formula would look like: "A thorough evaluation of [Product] shows that it is [Judgment], mainly due to [Criterion 1], [2], and [3]." For example, you might write, "A thorough evaluation of the Omega J8006HDS Nutrition Center Juicer shows that it is an outstanding choice for health enthusiasts, mainly due to its efficient juice extraction, durable build quality, and easy-to-clean design."
