How you as a therapist can maintain a sense of calm

Problem: Being out of control' is certainly one way that I would describe a crisis experience as well.  I frequently get called in to de-escalate crisis situations in my work, and one of the more striking characteristics of an individual in crisis is a more wild and fearful look in their eyes.  I can truly see how their stress has moved beyond their capabilities and they are in a state of overwhelm. When you are facing such a situation, what are your thoughts on how you as a therapist can maintain a sense of calm for the individual to try to anchor themselves to emotionally?
