Read Snow in Midsummer and discuss how the play imbues Confucian models with human realism and complexity. For instance, if confucianism places a high value on filial duty and piety, and Dou E is clearly motivated by duty to her father, and later to Cai, is Dou E a Confucian archetype or can she be perceived as an individual, motivated by passion and subject to historical social conditions? While Dou E cannot take action against her male oppressors, she does not hesitate to make judgements about their actions. How would you interpret Dou E? Could we consider this a feminist play, for instance?
