Problem
Altering the effects of drugs is a possible negative health consequence associated with smoking that has implications for the treatment of older individuals. Those who smoke or use nicotine products (including smokeless tobacco) and those who have just stopped smoking may have interactions. Interactions may be triggered by the physiologic effects of nicotine or by the hydrocarbons in cigarette smoke, which may alter the hepatic metabolism of some drugs. Chapter 9 discusses further information and instances of drug-nicotine interactions.
Name two drugs that are influenced by nicotine. What changes may it bring about? How would you approach this situation with your clients?
