Problem:
You work part-time as a counselor at a high school whose student body is predominantly white. You have much training and an educational background in lowering the rates of teen suicide. In the last year, fourteen students in your school district killed themselves; four of them attended a nearby school on a Native American Reservation. You want to get involved. You apply for, and receive, a governmental grant to visit the school, and write up a report with diagnostic assessments and treatment recommendations. What steps would you take to prepare to work with these cross-cultural clients? Specifically, how would Hays's approach to more culturally sensitive DSM-5 diagnoses inform your methodology?
