Both Brennan's Sex Tourism and the film Maquilapolis explore globalization and its impact on women's work. One case focuses on Free Trade Zone (FTZ) work at the border and the other on sex tourism in the Dominican Republic. In both cases, women migrate within their country to escape poverty and seek work opportunities. Yet, upward social mobility comes with a price. The factory workers often pay with their bodies and their health. The sex workers seemingly attempt to exploit foreign men in the hopes of securing a visa. Both examples raise deep questions about the impact of globalization in the developing world. Use both pieces to answer the following questions:
• Describe both the similarities and differences of how the women in Maquilapolis and the women in the Brennan's Sex Tourism have been impacted by globalization.
• What do you think?! Are these women positively or negatively impacted by globalization? Why?
