Assignment task: We have discussed the legal methods used to exclude Chinese, Japanese and Filipinos. While they all had some differences in application, the end result was the same. (i.e. trying to keep them out of the country or drive away those who were already here). However, the California tribelets are a different story, as they were native to the country and so couldn't be excluded from entering or really deported anywhere. So ,let's discuss the great differences in the treatment of California Indians by the State government and the Americans who settled in California after the Gold Rush.
Q1. How were the California Indians treated overall? How is this connected to the American view of them as people?
Q2. What legal methods (laws, acts, statutes by the California Legislature and the US Congress) were used to marginalize the Indians in California?
Q3. What was the intent of "assimilation" in regard to the various tribelets in California?
Q4. What were the ultimate goals and methods used?
Q5. Along the same lines, what was the result for Indians in California (from their viewpoint) of the programs intended to assimilate them into society?
Q6. What has enabled the California tribelets to not only survive, but to increase in numbers? {remember they are the most successful of all Indian tribes in US (2020)}
