Assignment task:
What feedback or suggestions do you have related to the use of active and/or passive in your classmate's post?
If the FMLA was federally mandated to include paid leave those families could have taken the time off that they qualified for to help, take care of their families or themselves. Unfortunately, most Americans cannot afford unpaid time off and have to make sacrifices in order to provide financially for their families. California was the first state to pass the Paid Family Leave law, which is funded solely on payroll tax on workers, this builds on the already existing state disability insurance (Huang, Yang, 2015). If California has figured out a way to successfully offer paid maternity leave, surely the rest of the country can follow suit. Having paid maternity leave can improve the physical and mental health of the mother making her a more valuable employee when she does return.
Revised:
California is a great example of how to successfully offer paid maternity leave, and the rest of the country should follow suit.
I think both are acceptable in this context, but I feel like the original sentence had more of an impact when trying to get the point across. It also had a certain tone to it that was a great way to wrap up the thought and leave the audience with a thought-provoking statement, before moving on to another point.
