How to solve Two-Step Equations?
Two-step equations involve two math operations - one operation is addition or subtraction. The second operation is multiplication or division.
To solve a two-step equation, follow the order of operations backwards - add or subtract, then multiply or divide to solve for x.
Example 1: Solve for x.
2x-1=3
2x-1+1=3+1 First we add 1 to both sides of the equation.
2x=4
2x/2=4/2 Now we divide both sides of the equation by 2.
x=2
Example 2: Solve for x.
x/2 +1=7
x/2+1-1=7-1 First we subtract 1 from both sides of the equation.
x/2 =6
2.x/2=2.6 Now we multiply both sides of the equation by 2.
x=12
