How to select chi-square in the statistics

Chi-square test for independence of attributes.

Using Crosstabs for Chi-Square

The first step in this assignment is to provide SPSS with the Value Labels for the values in LOCALE97.

According to the codebook:

LOCALE97 12        METROPOLITAN STATUSES

                                    1 = LARGE CITY

                                    2 = MID-SIZE CITY

                                    3 = URBAN FRINGE OF A LARGE CITY

                                    4 = URBAN FRINGE OF A MID-SIZE CITY

                                    5 = LARGE TOWN

                                    6 = SMALL TOWN

                                     7 = RURAL

Using Analyze>Descriptive Statistics>Crosstabs. Generate a table which cross tabulates locale97 with freelnch to assess the relationship between school location and socioeconomic status. The table should have correct value identifiers from the codebook and each cell must show the percentage of total schools represented by each cell. So as to get a table for "display quality", you should have freelnch as the "column" variable and locale97 as the "row" variable. Make sure that you select Chi-Square in the "Statistics".
