Problem
For this option, students will make review-style paper (3 to 4 pages) analyzing a Graphic Novel title of their choosing.. You can also ask me for suggestions of titles that you can use.
Your review should do the following:
1. Provide a brief, one paragraph synopsis of the story.
2. Identify the major themes in the graphic novel. Does the graphic novel deal with any of the themes we discuss in class? For example: identity, race, gender, history, etc.
3. Identify any gags (if possible) used in the graphic novel using the "How to Read Nancy" article by Newgarden and Karasik.
4. An analysis of the art style and conventions (panels, gutter, time, motion, etc.) used in the work. This should include plotting the style on Scott McCloud's picture plane (McCloud, 52-53).
5. An analysis of scene-to-scene types and breakdown (McCloud, 74-76). I strongly suggest including a bar graph the way McCloud does.
6. What others have to say about this graphic novel and whether or not you agree with their assessment? These could be articles, critiques, YouTube videos, etc. The more authority the author possesses of these critiques the better
