How to prepare for the examination

Problem

Tasks: Respond to nonverbal communication. Communicate respectfully with patients with individual diversity to religion and appearance. Demonstrate empathy, active listening, and nonverbal communication.

Background: The Sikh religion was founded in Northern India. Sikhs believe in one God, the equality of men and women, justice, and community service. Turban and Kachera are worn at all times for religious reasons. Turbans or scarves cover the uncut hair. If the turban or scarf needs to be removed, an alternative head covering should be provided. The turban or scarf should be treated with respect. Placing it on the floor or near shoes would be a sign of disrespect. Kachera are undershorts/undergarments and at least one leg is to remain in the Kachera at all times.

Scenario: You are preparing a patient for an examination. The patient is Sikh. The provider always wants the patient to completely undress, wear a gown, and be seated on the exam table before she comes into the room. You are uncomfortable in this situation because you have never worked with a patient who is Sikh.

Directions: Role-play the scenario with a peer. Instruct the peer (patient) how to prepare for the examination. Respond to the patient's nonverbal communication. Demonstrate empathy, active listening, and nonverbal communication.
