Problem: Vesteinsdottir et al (2019) study how to increase honesty in surveys. They find that online surveys demonstrated slight reduction in socially desirability bias, but hypothesize that as populations become increasingly technologically literate, the feeling of privacy on the internet may fade. While this dishonesty has implications in research, it is, in my opinion, more concerning in counseling. To your point Melanie, some mental illness is viewed as sinful or illegal in some cultures. If a counselor is assessing a client, whether it be a paper intake or in person, if the client is responding honestly about their symptoms or thoughts, it will be challenging to offer support. Do you think this honesty is associated to just cultural norms, or could it be equally related to client-readiness?
