Assignment task:
Engage in a new cultural activity. Select from one of the following activities:
1. Visit a house of worship or attend the ethnic ceremony (including on-campus student-sponsored ethnic festivals) for the first time. Examples would be a service delivered in a different language (Spanish, Filipino, Russian, Latin, etc.,), Jewish synagogue, Muslim mosque, a Buddhist temple. Attend a Quinceanera, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Bris, or ethnic marriage ceremony. Students selecting this option must display respect and reverence during the ceremony, regardless of opinions.
Note: On-campus ethnic ceremonies are posted on campus new forms and on the campus calendar in the UC. The Office of Residence Life is also a resource for time and place of activities.
2. Visit a cultural/heritage center for the first time and learn about a different way of life.
3. Spend time talking with someone from another country about their daily life and how it differs from your own. Ask specific questions concerning food and beverages, home life, and typical roles by gender.
4. Watch a movie that is in a different language that you do not speak fluently. Subtitles are allowed.
Once you've completed provide a detailed description of the event and answer the following questions: Was it a positive experience? Did you enjoy yourself? Did you find yourself excited or dreading the activity? Did you feel uncomfortable at any point in time? If so, why. After completing the activity, the student will indicate which level of the cultural diversity continuum best describes him/her currently.
