Problem
On p. 176 of our course packet, Rodriguez quotes Richard Hoggart at length. Hoggart says that the "scholarship boy" starts to see life as a ladder. How is this a good way to understand how the scholarship boy's mind is limited and how the system rewards him for that limitation?
Secondly: what's a productive, alternative metaphor for how we could envision education? What are the strengths-and possible limitations-of your metaphor. Discuss your metaphor and its implications in detail. If not a ladder, then what?
