Discussion Question
The following powerpoint describes several theories on deviance, but more importantly, the author describes deviance from all three major sociological perspectives: Functionalist, Conflict and Interactionism. Your discussion questions are based upon information in the text book. You will be advised if any information from the powerpoint will be on your final.
The speaker is not the most dynamic speaker you will ever hear, but the information is good. Clear and succinct.
1. Provide two examples of how the definition of deviance can change over time. Give two examples of how deviance varies across cultures.
2. One government policy (law) requires sex offender registration (Megan's law). a) Describe how this policy can permanently stigmatize the individual(s) labeled as deviant. b) Should this be legal?
3. Theory: Although not really explained in your text, our entire juvenile court system was set up to make allowances for underage offenders in the sense that they would not be ‘labeled' as criminals for the rest of their lives. This is why juvenile arrest and conviction records are sealed upon the minor turning 18. At one time, all records were sealed or expunged, but there have been recent changes in the law that prevent some serious felonies from being sealed. It is my understanding this is a direct result of the increase in violent crimes committed by juveniles -- in particular, gang related violent crimes.
a) Discuss whether modern society should abandon the labeling premise for juveniles. Do the needs of society outweigh the need of the individual?
